About our school

MFL

At Castleton, Glaisdale and Lealholm, our children are offered the opportunity to learn about different cultures and understand diversity.

Intent

Curriculum design, coverage and appropriateness

  • The curriculum is age-appropriate, allows for progression and is supported by electronic and physical resources.
  • All pupils have access to events throughout the year which develop their cultural understanding.

Implementation

Curriculum delivery

Teaching (pedagogy)

Assessment (formative and summative)

  • French is currently taught to mixed year groups: Y3/4 and Y5/6.
  • Pupils at Castleton and Glaisdale Primary Schools are taught by a specialist languages teacher from Caedmon College, Whitbyone of our local secondary schools. As well as providing children with high-quality French lessons, this also provides opportunities for building links with Caedmon College and its students.
  • During 2021/22, pupils at Castleton and Glaisdale Primary Schools will explore how iPads can be used to support learning in French, with a focus on using apps to record and then evaluate pupils’ spoken French.

Assessment

  • Formative assessment takes place during and/or after each lesson and additional support and/or resources are available as required. Assessment can include peer and self-marking, where appropriate.
  • From September 2021, Balance will be used as an online assessment tool for French.

Impact

Attainment and progress (including national tests and assessments)

  • EYFS/KS1

French is not taught in EYFS or KS1.

  • KS2

The standards in French are not formally assessed. However, all children in KS2 have access to a French curriculum, based on the National Curriculum for Languages, which provides access to age-appropriate content in order to ensure pupils are adequately prepared for the transition to Year 7, in relation to foreign language knowledge and skills.

From September 2021, we will be using Balance online assessment system to record achievement against the NC objectives for Languages.
