About our school

MFL

At Castleton, Glaisdale and Lealholm, our children are offered the opportunity to learn about different cultures and understand diversity.

MFL helps all of our children to broaden their experiences and understanding of languages and apply this to everyday life.

We have chosen to teach French, partly because this subject is available at the local secondary schools and partly due to staff interest, ability and experience.

Although formal teaching of French doesn’t begin until Year 3, our younger pupils are exposed to the language through basic vocabulary and activities, such as answering the register by saying, ‘Bonjour.’

How is French taught at our school?

French is currently taught to mixed year groups: Y3/4 and Y5/6. Pupils have a weekly French lesson in alternate half terms. We have chosen to follow the North Yorkshire County Council scheme of learning for French, which is divided into units, as shown on the overview below.

Cultural understanding

We believe that it is important for our pupils to develop their cultural understanding, alongside the communication skills the MFL curriculum develops. All pupils have access to events and assemblies throughout the year.
